Noah Oppenheim to adapt George Orwell's '1984'

Noah Oppenheim is one of the hottest writers in Hollywood right now, even though he doesn't have a single script that's been produced quite yet. The ex-producer of NBC's The Today Show has seen his name attached to a number of remakes already, including MGM's WarGames, and Daniel Espinosa's Snabba Cash. Now he'll take on one more, adapting George Orwell's sci-fi classic, Nineteen Eighty-Four.

The project first came to light back in March when graffiti artist, Shepard Fairey(the guy behind the Obama "Hope" images) came aboard as a producer There's still no director attached at this stage, however, so we're still pretty early on in development. Orwell's 1948 novel dealt with a totalitarian, dystopian society known as Oceania, where a man whose job it is to rewrite history to always favor The Party, turns on "Big Brother" by falling in love and starting a rebellion. The book was adapted for the big screen in 1984(duh) and starred John Hurt. The book deserves a much better version, however, and so far this one seems to be coming together nicely.

Oppenheim is also attached to Gary Ross's Houdini biopic, and an adaptation of the sci-fi novel, The Maze Runner.  [Deadline]
