Sure Shots: 'Labor Day'; Jena Malone; Alessandro Nivola

* Jason Reitman(Young Adult) is hard at work on Labor Day, his next film which he'll both adapt and direct based on the coming of age novel by Joyce Maynard. Alexie Gilmore(World's Greatest Dad), Lucas Hedges, and Brooke Smith(Series 7: The Contenders) are the latest additions to the cast, which already includes Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, James Van Der Beek, and Clark Gregg. The story follows a single mother and her son who pick up a drifter, who turns out to be an escaped convict. Over the course of one Labor Day weekend, they all teach one another a few lessons about life. [Variety]

* One of my favorite actresses, Jena Malone, has seen her career take off over the last year. While Sucker Punch didn't pan out as anyone would have expected, seeing her in such a high profile, mainstream film is a step in the right direction. Now she's journeying back to her indie roots by taking on The Go-Getters, an LA noir film from director Michael C. Martin. She'll play a struggling actress who gets caught up in a heist planned by two underworld brothers. Malone was recently seen in the hit cable mini-series, Hatfields & McCoys. [Deadline]

* Alessandro Nivola(Junebug) and Kristopher Higgins(The Secret Life of the American Teenager) are the latest to join The Devil's Knot, Atom Egoyan's narrative take on The West Memphis 3 false conviction story. Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, and Mireille Enos will lead the film about the three Arkansas teens who were convicted of murdering three 8-year old kids without much evidence against them. Higgins will play Jessie Misskelley, one of the defendants. Nivola has the most interesting role by far, playing Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one of the victims who has become a possible suspect in recent years. [Deadline]
