Tops at the Box Office: 'Madagascar 3' keeps 'Rock of Ages', 'That's My Boy' stuck in the past

1. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted- $35.5M/$120.45M
Dreamworks was smart to release their latest Madagascar film when they did, giving it a two-week head start before the Pixar juggernaut rolls through with Brave. The latest adventure featuring the lost crew of talking zoo animals is performing up to previous standards here on the domestic front, but worldwide it's actually on pace to outperform the others. A lot of that has to do with the inflated 3D ticket prices, but also the general lack of kid friendly movies out right now. The 40% drop in attendance is acceptable, and the word of mouth has been strong, so count on a Madagascar 4 in another year or two.

2. Prometheus- $20.2M/$88.85M
Ok, there's good news and bad news. The bad is that Prometheus suffered a mighty 60% drop from last week, meaning that the lukewarm response from critics and audiences has had an effect. Clearly, these are disappointing domestic numbers for such a highly awaited event film, and despite all the lingering questions the film proposes, not too many people were willing to sit through it again to try and figure stuff out. However, Prometheus is kicking butt overseas, pulling in a total of $90M so far. Will all of this amount to 20th Century Fox green lighting a sequel?  Tough call, Ripley. Tough call. My money is on a definite "Yes".
3. Rock of Ages- $15M
Yikes. Two 80s themed movies in Rock of Ages and Adam Sandler's That's My Boy took it on the chin this weekend. Rock of Ages may have suffered the backlash from other recent, crappy celebrity packed comedies like New Year's Eve and What to Expect When You're Expecting. Clearly, the luster has faded from these types of ensembles, even with the usually bankable Adam Shankman at the helm and a bouncy ad campaign. It's possible that the film, which features covers of old 80s rock tunes, only appeals to those who have a fondness for the time period. What the heck does someone under the age of 30 care about a Def Leppard?
4. Snow White and the Huntsman- $13.8M/$122.6M
5. That's My Boy- $13M
Hmmm...is Adam Sandler finished?  Of course he isn't, and Grown Ups 2 will probably pull $200M easy no matter how much we dump all over it. Certainly, the R-rated version of Sandler is dead as a doornail. The guy has spent the bulk of his recent career making easily marketable, inoffensive comedies to great success, leaving behind those who liked his more objectionable early stuff. However, as movies like Jack & Jill and Just Go With It stunk up the joint, you'd think a return to raunch like That's My Boy would be a no-brainer hit no matter how terrible it looked. Apparently not. While not heavily promoted, the film featured a retro vibe which had Sandler dressed like Han Solo and the likes of Todd Bridges(!!!) and Vanilla Ice as co-stars. I doubt word of mouth about this aspect of it helped lure potential viewers in.
6. Men in Black III - $10M/$152.7M
7. The Avengers- $8.8M/$586.7M
8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- $2.2M/$35.1M
9. Moonrise Kingdom- $2.18M/$6.78M
Continuing it's strong, slow rollout, Moonrise Kingdom bumped up another 80 sites while still holding on to a $12,000 per average. That's incredible, especially for a film that has yet to hit nationwide release. That's assuming it ever does.
10.  What to Expect When You're Expecting- $1.3M/$38.76M
