"How much do you know about fear?" a woman asks Daniel Craig as James Bond in Skyfall, and that's a fairly ominous theme for this Bond installment, isn't it? That line from one of the newest Bond girls, Berenice Marlohe as Severine, seems more like something Selina Kyle would ask of Batman in The Dark Knight Rises than the more action-heavy, thinking-light Bond movies. But this newest trailer from Skyfall seems determined to shake up all our notions of Bond so far, much like Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace attempted before it. It seems like director Sam Mendes is really set on take things in a more anarchic, chaotic direction, and I'm totally fine with that. (I will, however, dislike the man forever for cheating on Kate Winslet when they were married. Who does that?)
But anyway, back to the task at hand: This full-length trailer for Skyfall debuted on Moviefone this morning, and it's a doozy. You have Bond "dying" at the hands of Eve (the beautifully tough Naomie Harris, of 28 Days Later), but then coming back to MI6 when M's (Judi Dench) life is threatened. We've always known M has been a surrogate mother figure for Bond - noticed so astutely by Eva Green's character Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale - and so Bond pulls himself out of his fake death to come back and save her from the kind of villain who hacks into M's computer and advises her to "Think on your sins." Creepy!
Then there are a bunch of blown-up buildings, new character Q and an appearance by Ralph Fiennes, coffins with the British flag on them, Bond making out with hotties (duh), and - finally - the appearance of Javier Bardem as our villain, the very blond Raoul Silva. Bardem's ominous narration about Bond's and M's downfall is proof he's definitely worthy of the role, and I'm all about it. After No Country for Old Men, Bardem has earned his right to horrify me. Way to go, Mr. Penelope Cruz.
