Let's be honest: There's really no good reason to try and make a live-action Masters of the Universe movie. I grew up with He-Man, had all the toys, and even enjoyed the 1987 Dolph Lundgren film back when I was 10 years old. But it's not something that had all that much depth to it. Even by 80s cartoon standards, He-Man's battle with Skeletor was kinda weak. Yet Sony and Mattel have been trying for years to get it done, and now they've taken a big step towards making it happen.
It was back in 2010 when we last heard that Predators scribes Mike Finch and Alex Litvack were hired to write the script, and now finally a director has been found in Jon Chu. I guess they figure if he can take on one toy franchise in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, why not give him one more? This all about selling merchandise, anyway. Chu is probably best known for directing two Step Up flicks to marginal success, and that ridiculous Justin Bieber concert film, Never Say Never.
Chu is currently in the middle of filming reshoots for G.I. Joe, so they can tack on a few extra minutes of Channing Tatum blowin' shit up. Speaking of which, anybody think he might make for an interesting He-Man? [Deadline]
