Ruben Fleischer to direct that 'Spy Hunter' movie you forgot about

Was someone in Hollywood listening in on our video game movie episode of PDC Live? Within days of airing it we've had an update on the long-developing Castlevania film. And now today we've seen a major step forward for Warner Bros.' Spy Hunter adaptation, which has been in the works for a friggin' eternity.

Vulture reports that Ruben Fleischer will continue his unpredictable directorial run by taking on the film, which if you remember the old Midway video game was basically just a car shooting stuff up and crashing a lot. The film has been bumping along since 2003, attracting a bunch of talent including Paul W.S. Anderson(naturally), John Woo, Zak Penn, and most recently featured a script by Chad St. John(the now-shelved Motor City). St. John's script is out, and Fleischer is currently seeking new screenwriters for a fresh take. Dwayne Johnson was attached to star(and was on the cover of the 2006 game) for the longest time, but it remains to be seen if he'd still be involved. Probably not, as he's got his own fast cars and big guns franchise as part of Fast & Furious.

Fleischer's been pretty hard to pin down, and each of his films has been wildly different than the last. After wowing many of us with Zombieland, he followed it up with the mediocre 30 Minutes or Less, and next year brings us his eagerly awaited Gangster Squad. He's also reportedly on the shortlist to lead Warner Bros. Justice League film. With Spy Hunter set to return to home consoles this fall, this is probably a cash grab for the studio, but Fleischer has proven to be a good enough director to do something cool with the property.
