Carey Mulligan sought for Thomas Vinterberg's 'Far from the Madding Crowd'
After making his breakout with The Celebration way back in 1998, Dogme 95 founder Thomas Vinterberg has mostly slipped into obscurity. He hasn't stopped working, but for the most part his films had largely been ignored until this year's Cannes where The Hunt floored critics, securing the Best Actor award for star Mads Mikkelsen. So what's next for Vinterberg? Tackling a literary classic, that's what.
TheWrap reports that Vinterberg is in talks to direct Far from the Madding Crowd, an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic 1874 novel. David Nicolls(One Day) is providing the script, which follows the shifting relationship between lady Bathsheba Everdene and shepherd Gabriel Oak, who is one of a few men trying to court her love. Carey Mulligan is being eyed to play Everdene, and I think she'd make for a perfect choice, possibly matching Julie Christie's performance in John Schlesinger's 1967 adaptation.
This one's pretty early in development, but the combination of Vinterberg, Nicholls, and Mulligan is pretty tough to beat. Color me excited.
