Summit Entertainment, those fine folks responsible for inflicting Twilight upon us, have been trying to develop another such adaptation for years now with little success. If I Stay is based on the tween novel by Gayle Forman, and has had Dakota Fanning, Catherine Hardwicke, and Brazilian director Heitor Dhalia attached to it at one point or another. But now it looks like there's finally some real progress, with a new director and a red hot young star taking over the lead.
Variety reports that Chloe Moretz is set to take on the role of Mia, a quiet 17-year old girl with a gift for playing the cello. After an accident puts her in a coma, she has an out-of-body experience where her memories flash before her eyes. Taking over as director is R.J. Cutler, the documentary filmmaker whose latest The World According to Dick Cheney recently premiered at Sundance. The Emmy-winner will be making his narrative feature debut with the film, so it'll be interesting to see what he brings to the table.
Moretz has kind of become the go-to gal for teen supernatural dramas and horrors. She previously starred in vampire flick Let Me In, and has the upcoming Carrie remake. She'll be appearing next as part of the ensemble comedy Movie 43, and later this year she'll be back as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass 2.
