Even though I think many were quietly looking forward to the Coen Brothers' folk music tale, Inside Llewyn Davis, they probably weren't prepared for just how good the trailer turned out to be. It looks completely unlike anything the Coens have ever done, which is really saying something considering how diverse they've been over the years. The film stars Oscar Isaac as the titular 1960s folk musician in Greenwich Village, and the story based on the memoir of Dave van Ronk. But as author Elijah Wald tells the New York Times, the character Isaac is playing isn't at all van Ronk, even if the music is.
Along with news that the film may screen next week for industry types and potential buyers, also come a pair of new images of Isaac and co-star Carey Mulligan in mid-performance. They kind of make me wish the entire thing was in black and white. Joel Cohen says the film shares a kinship with Les Miserables in that almost all of the characters have an opportunity to sing. Makes me wonder if he filmed their performances live on set the way Tom Hooper did. It certainly sounds like that may be the case. Mulligan and Isaac have strong voices, and obviously so does Justin Timberlake. Not so sure about John Goodman. The music will be pulled straight from the sounds of the 60s, although there are apparently a few "anachronisms". Probably a couple of 50s or 70s tunes will bleed in.
The film may make its debut at Cannes, but I think it may be bought by then. We'll see. Check out the new images below.
