"Before they were incorporated, they had to be educated". Quite the clever tagline, I must say. Pixar has revealed a brand new trailer for their upcoming prequel, Monsters University, which takes us back to the college days of James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), showing us how they overcame their obvious differences and became the best buds we loved in Monsters, Inc.
Directed by animation vet Dan Scanlon, the film captures that same feel we're accustomed to, but most importantly the connection between Mike and Sulley is there. Even though they clearly start off as rivals, and perhaps it was too much showing their very first meeting, it's clear they're destined to be friends. There are some great visual sight gags, as well, and the youthful character designs are flawless. Pixar have come up with what look like dozens of individually identifiable monsters here, which is pretty amazing. The trailer rolls out in Revenge of the Nerds-fashion, setting up the scary alpha monsters vs. the geeks. Can you guess which side Mike and Sulley fall on?
But will it measure up to the original? Monsters Inc. is in my personal top three favorite Pixar movies, so it'll be tough. Enroll in Monsters University when it opens on June 21st. Check out the trailer below, and if interested in some extra credit, there's also a cool extended preview.
