Ryan Gosling sets 'Doctor Who' star Matt Smith for 'How to Catch a Monster'
I'll be the first to admit that Doctor Who is one of those things that is completely lost on me. Perhaps it didn't snag me at a young enough age, or maybe I'm just being stubborn in avoiding the cherished BBC series. Regardless, one thing I do know is that the guys who have played the good Doctor haven't amounted to much out in Hollywood.
That could be about to change as Variety reports current Doctor Who, Matt Smith, will take the male lead in How to Catch a Monster, the directorial debut by Ryan Gosling. Smith, who is about to begin his fourth season, will join Ben Mendelsohn, Christina Hendricks, Rob Zebrecky, and Gosling's girlfriend Eva Mendes. It's still a little unclear exactly what the "male lead" entails for this particular story. Hendricks plays Billy, a single mother of two boys, who gets swept into a dark and macabre fantasy world while her son discovers an underwater town. Clearly, Smith won't be playing one of the two boys, so maybe he's a bad guy of some sort?
The last Doctor Who star to try his hand at a major American studio film was David Tennant in the Fright Night remake, and we saw how disastrously that went. Hopefully Smith finds a bit more success.
