David O. Russell's Abscam film finally gets a title

It was obvious right away that David O. Russell's upcoming project would be in desperate need of a new title. The marketing boys would be having fits trying to find a way to make American Bullshit work. Although with a cast that includes Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, and Robert De Niro, you could call it pretty much anything and people would turn out. With shooting now underway, we can finally stop calling it the "untitled Abscam film" and start calling it American Hustle.

With some truly hilarious set photos already flooding in, it looks like we can expect this to be more of a silly crime romp than a serious political drama. The story is set during the Abscam scandal of the late 70s and early 80s, in which a con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner (Adams) are forced to work with a reckless FBI agent (Cooper) to set up other con artists, criminals, and crooked politicians. Renner is the popular New Jersey state assemblyman at the center of it all.

Opening nationwide on Christmas Day, American Hustle also stars Louis C.K., Alessandro Nivola, Michael Pena, Dawn Olivieri, Elisabeth Rohm, and Jack Huston.[Box Office Mojo]
