'Insidious 3' Is On The Way, But Who Will Direct It?
"I'm going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. 'Conjuring' and 'Insidious 2' are my two last scary movies. Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you're know as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I'm a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films."
That was what Insidious and Saw director James Wan recently told Moviefone about his directing future, making it clear he has no desire to do another horror. That makes things a little awkward after his Insidious Chapter 2 opened to a massive $41M this past weekend, because it all but guaranteed a sequel. And yep, that's exactly what is happening as Blumhouse Productions announced that Insidious 3 is in the works.
At this point the only one attached is writer Leigh Whannell, who has been by Wan's side for the Saw films, Dead Silence, and both Insidious movies. No word on whether stars Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, Barbara Hershey, and Lin Shaye will be returning, but one has to think Wan's departure also opens up the door for the franchise to go in a different direction. Perhaps the next film will follow another terrorized family dealing with the astral realm known as The Further? Or maybe we'll get that Specs (played by Whannell) and Tucker ghostbusting spinoff I keep hoping for? One has to think anybody involved with the V/H/S movies would be a prime candidate to take over, or perhaps Whannell will direct it himself?
As for Wan, he's already moved on to bigger projects with considerably bigger budgets, beginning work on Fast & Furious 7 (first set pic here) for next year's blockbuster season.
