'The Walking Dead' Spinoff Series in the Works for 2015

AMC's The Waking Dead is currently the #1 show amongst people between the ages of 18-49, which studio execs refer to as the demographic "sweet spot". That's where all the money is, folks. And that's why the network is looking to milk their cash cow a bit further by developing a companion series they plan to have ready by 2015.

Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman will be on board to produce the show, which will be set in the same continuity but follow a different set of characters.  The current show has mostly strayed from the comic book storylines, only touching upon a few plot points from different angles, but Kirkman's goal for the new series is to do something that starts completely from scratch....

Kirkman: "The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."

Spinoff shows like this have been done numerous times before, and with a pretty high rate of success. Buffy the Vampire Slayer spun Angel into his own parallel series, and in the 1970s All In the Family gave us  long-running comedies Maude and The Jeffersons.  Not to mention Cheers and Frasier, with the latter arguably the better show. Heck, I'd say there's no argument whatsoever.

So chances are we'll see characters we've already met in The Walking Dead making the jump to this new show, the seeds for which should be planted when season four begins October 13th.
