'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' Bumped to January 2014; Gets IMAX Release

Even before Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street was moved from November to a Christmas release date there were rumblings that Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit would get moved to next year. The month of December is packed with both Oscar contenders and high-profile blockbusters, and the film was being lost even with a fresh marketing campaign just kicking off. And now Paramount has gone ahead and made things official by bumping it to January 17th 2014 when it will hit theaters and IMAX.

Chris Pine is the latest to play the popular Tom Clancy character in a mission that has him trying to stop an act of economic terrorism. Kenneth Branagh directs and co-stars as the villain, joined by Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Colm Feore, and David Paymer.

It's unclear whether this move raises the film's prospects, though. While there is definitely less competition to deal with, audiences tend to avoid the movies altogether in the early part of the year. They turn out mainly for lower-budgeted genre films, but the numbers those movies haul in wouldn't be enough for 'Jack Ryan' to make Paramount happy.
