David Goyer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Rumored for New 'Sandman' Movie
Every few years or so, the subject of adapting Neil Gaiman's epic, seminal comic book series The Sandman is dragged back up with nothing ever happening. With the first new issue of the comic in ten years on stands right now, it's the perfect time for the idea to be sprung back to life like dreams conjured up by Morpheus himself. The gang over at Badass Digest has word that David Goyer has pitched Warner Bros. on a new Sandman film, and they are apparently into the idea.
First of all, it's no surprise that the studio would listen to anything Goyer has to say, considering his work on The Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, and all the other superhero stuff he'll be doing for them in the future. Plus, it appears that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is involved, although it's unclear whether he's to play Morpheus or to direct. He's coming off the success of his debut feature, Don Jon, in which he showed he's got a keen visual eye, something he would definitely need to capture Morpheus' realm, The Dreaming. It still seems unlikely that he'd take such a huge leap in scope but one never knows, and Gordon-Levitt has yet to really fail at anything big he's undertaken.
The site notes that this is all extremely early, and let's be honest, these Sandman efforts have a habit of crumbling apart. Roger Avary (The Rules of Attraction) was briefly attached to helm one version back in the '90s, with a script by the writers of Pirates of the Caribbean. The script was then passed to the guy who wrote the abysmal Jonah Hex movie, and Gaiman proceeded to trash his draft mercilessly. James Mangold and Eric Kripke (Supernatural) toyed with the idea of TV projects and neither went very far.
So there's good reason to be skeptical, and with Warner Bros. busy making they they don't screw up Batman vs. Superman it's unlikely this will go anywhere for a very long time.
