Holiday Turd: 'It's a Wonderful Life' Sequel in the Works

There's a new entry in the pantheon of unnecessary Hollywood sequels, and this one might be the most insulting one yet. If there's one thing we can always count on every holiday season (besides the ugly Old Navy shirt your aunt always sends) it's scads and scads of It's A Wonderful Life reruns. The holiday staple signifies Christmas better than pretty much anything, and now the Frank Capra classic is about to get a sequel nobody asked for. Can someone get a camera in Capra's grave to see if he's turning over in it?

Producers Allen J. Schwalb and Bob Farnsworth are ready to present this holiday lump of coal with Farnsworth and Martha Bolton providing the script. So what is this masterful story idea that demands this unwanted sequel take place? Badly-titled It's a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story, the film follows George Bailey's unlikeable grandson as he's visited by an angel and shown how the world would be different if he was never born. How novel. Anyway, remember the girl who broke out the famous "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings!" in the original film? Well that was Karolyn Grimes playing Jimmy Stewart's daughter Zuzu, and she'll reprise that role for the sequel, only now she's the angel teaching George his lesson. What? No plans to give us a CGI Jimmy Stewart to better retain the "spirit" of the original?

Other original cast members are being sought to return, but if producers want to justify the reported $25M-$35M budget they'll want to find someone with a higher profile for the lead role. That's assuming the plan is to even drop this seasonal turd into theaters, where curiosity may convince some to check out how badly Capra's film is besmirched. It's just a ridiculous notion, honestly. What, is there going to be a Casablanca sequel next? Oh wait.....   [Variety]
