Paul Feig Developing 'The Heat' Spinoff
“I know they say never say never, but right now, I can’t imagine it. I don’t want to ruin what Melissa and I had. If a miracle happens where [a script] shows up that really and truly outdid the first and provided an experience that was better than the first one, then I would look at it. But I’m not there.”
That was what The Heat star Sandra Bullock said after last summer's hit cop comedy took home $229M worldwide, obviously putting the kibosh on any reunion with Melissa McCarthy and director Paul Feig. But 20th Century Fox aren't so willing to let a good thing go to waste, and apparently neither is Feig, because the director has come up with another way to keep the laughs going.
Deadline reports Feig is developing a spinoff to The Heat, but it won't involve McCarthy or Bullock's characters. Instead it will be focused on peripheral players Beth and Gina, who were part of McCarthy's obnoxious family in the film. Jamie Denbo and Jessica Chaffin will reprise their roles, and they're pretty cool with Feig as he produced their fake Brit talk show Ronna & Beverly. The report goes on to add that this doesn't "preclude the possibility of a sequel to 'The Heat'", but right now there are no plans and Bullock doesn't seem to be budging.
Does anybody really want to see a film about two minor, not especially memorable characters played by actresses nobody in America has heard of? For that matter, would the studio drop some serious coin on something like this? Probably not. Even if it doesn't happen, Feig is still producing the upcoming Peanuts movie, and will reunite with McCarthy for the spy caper, Susan Cooper.
