Biopic on Katharine Hepburn's Private Life in the Works
Katharine Hepburn led a big, glamorous life in the public eye and so far every film we've seen about her has focused on that side exclusively. Cate Blanchett played her a few years back in The Aviator which was about her relationship with Howard Hughes, and recently we learned her decades-long romance with Spencer Tracy would be the subject of another film.
But what about the private side of Hepburn? That's about to become the subject of a new biopic based on William J. Mann's book, Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn. Put together by independent producers and directed by Clare Beavan (Daphne), the film simply titled Kate will look at Hepburn's career by contrasting two very different sides of her; the ambitious 25-year-old who made a name for herself by going against the grain, and the 80-year-old Hollywood legend looking back at the sacrifices she made for her career. Michael Zam and Jaffe Cohen, who previously wrote a film on Joan Crawford, have been hired to work the screenplay. This one could be more provocative than any other Hepburn biopic we've seen as Mann's book goes into her sexual relationship with actress Laura Harding.
No word on when filming will begin, but even in a smaller-budgeted movie the chance to play someone like Hepburn should have a lot of actresses buzzing around the role. [Variety]
