Box Office: 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Slices Up $65M Debut
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $65M
Those who thought Michael Bay would be the deathknell of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might want to grab another slice of pizza and take a seat. The film overperformed with $65M when analysts were projecting only about $40M. This is despite some pretty awful critic reviews (I dug it enough), and the lingering presence of Guardians of the Galaxy, and maybe it has do to with the marketing clearly aimed at luring in kids. Whatever the reason, the $125M film, which earned another $28M for a total of $93M, is a hit and Paramount are probably going to release something on a sequel real soon.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy- $41.5M/$175.9M
Tumbled 56% in the face of TMNT's strength, but at this point Marvel is probably through the moon with the success of their oddball team of heroes. The film has earned $313M worldwide at this point and given the amazing reviews it should be sticking around for awhile.
3. Into the Storm- $18M
Even though it kinda looks like something that should be on the SyFy Channel, the found-footage disaster flick Into the Storm performed well with $18M. The $50M film features no big stars and mostly earned comparisons to Twister, a movie older than most of its young cast.
4. The Hundred-Foot Journey- $11.1M
Not even the might of producers Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg could spice up the box office for The Hundred-Foot Journey. Helen Mirren stars as basically the only marketable draw, and it suffers from following so closely behind Jon Favreau's Chef which did exceptionally well. Internationally may be where the French culinary dramedy finds a wider audience but those numbers aren't available yet.
5. Lucy- $9.3M/$97.3M
6. Step Up All In- $6.5M
Step Up may be going "All In' for the fifth entry in the dance franchise but audiences weren't ready to make that commitment. Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna Dewan were basically the only ones who didn't return for this all-star jam set in Las Vegas, and the results were clearly felt as the $6.5M is the lowest debut yet. These movies make their money overseas, though, and $26M internationally is a pretty good start. Both thematically and financially this still feels like the end of the road.
7. Hercules- $5.7M/$63.4M
8. Get On Up- $5M/$22.9M
9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- $4.4M/$197.8M
10. Planes: Fire and Rescue- $2.4M/$52.9M
