Eddie Redmayne is Stephen Hawking in First Trailer for 'The Theory of Everything'

This season's Oscar race may be graced with a couple of movies about extraordinarily smart individuals. There's Benedict Cumberbatch starring as Alan Turing in the much buzzed-about The Imitation Game, about the famed code-breaking and mathematician. And then there is The Theory of Everything, which features rising-star Eddie Redmayne as the famous theoretical physicist and intellectual champion, Stephen Hawking. The latter film hasn't quite gathered the same amount of momentum but that may be changing with the release of the first trailer ahead of its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Redmayne caught a lot of attention for his soulful performance in Les Miserables, and he's set to play the villain the Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending next year, but taking on the role of Hawking poses a unique challenge. Directed by James Marsh (Man on Wire) and co-starring Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) as Hawking's wife, Jane Hawking, the film tells the " extraordinary story of one of the world’s greatest living minds, the renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, who falls deeply in love with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde. Once a healthy, active young man, Hawking received an earth-shattering diagnosis at 21 years of age. With Jane fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of – time. Together, they defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed."

Adapted from Jane's memoir,Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, this appears to be just as much her story as it is his. The Theory of Everything opens in theaters on November 7th.
