Drew Goddard to Direct Marvel's "Spectacular" Spider-Man Film

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is headed back to Marvel, and the effects of that earth-shattering news continue to reverberate. There have been plenty of rumors already about what Sony/Marvel have planned; such as making this more of a high school-based film possibly with a minority actor in the Spidey role, but little in the way of confirmations. Now Latino Review claims to have a line on plot details, a potential title, and oh yeah, who the writer/director will be for this new film. Check your Spider Sense for spoilers beyond this point!

To the surprise of absolutely no one, it appears Sony is ditching all of their future plans for Spider-Man spinoffs. That would include Venom, the female-led movie, and most importantly Sinister Six. The creative force behind Sinister Six was intended to be Drew Goddard, but now he's been set to write and direct the new Marvel Spider-Man film, which may be titled Spectacular Spider-Man after another long-running Spidey comic.

The rumored plot sounds a little ridiculous, too, almost like an episode of Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends. It would supposedly see Spidey trying to impress Iron Man so he can join the Avengers. In a way that makes sense considering he'll appear in Captain America: Civil War and may turn up in the two-part Avengers: Infinity War. How will he earn a spot on the team? By taking on the Sinister Six, who will be introduced so they can maybe be spun off later.

Notice that you haven't heard anything about Spider-Man's origin? We've already seen it twice in the span of a few years, and thankfully this new film would leave the origin out completely. Hoorah!!

The Goddard news seems solid, but take the rest of this stuff with a grain of salt considering the source.  Assuming it's all true, how does this sound to you? The new Spider-Man movie opens July 28th 2017. [Latino Review]
