Ryan Reynolds Talks 'Deadpool' Film's Devotion to the Comic

As someone who counts Deadpool as one of his favorite Marvel characters of all time, my anticipation for the upcoming movie knows no limits. While that enthusiasm is tempered somewhat by the treatment Deadpool received in X-men Origins: Wolverine, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been developing their screenplay for years, and by most accounts it stays true to the R-rated spirit of the character. Star Ryan Reynolds has been saying as much himself for quite awhile, and when Shortlist caught up with him he reiterated that the film will appeal to devoted fans of the Merc-with-a-Mouth.

Reynolds: “I’m incredibly happy about it – we’ve got a director that understands that world, and writers with a slavish devotion to the canon of that character. That’s the most important aspect: it’s made in a way the most critical of fanboys could embrace. Well, that’s the hope.”

The leaked test footage that excited fans and really got the ball rolling at 20th Century Fox would really seem to back up Reynolds' claims. It was violent and funny, fourth wall breaking stuff, and it looks like a perfect counterpoint to the serious X-men line. Directed by Tim Miller, Deadpool opens February 12th 2016.
