A Remake of Teen Comedy 'She's All That' is On the Way
You have to appreciate that a film about changing one's persona completely keeps getting remade. 1999's She's All That, which starred Rachael Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr. and centered on a girl in need of a serious makeover, is getting a modern remake because why the Hell not?
Miramax and The Weinstein Company are behind the project, which has Kenny Leon, director of the Steel Magnolias remake, taking the reins. She's All That was based on the play Pygmalion and the 1964 film My Fair Lady, and it made more than $100M while spawning numerous knock-offs and copycats. Cook was the dorky gal at the center of the story who gets a lesson in being hot and cool by the most popular boy in school, played by Prinze. It starts off as as a bet, but naturally they fall in love along the way. The film also starred Anna Paquin, Matthew Lillard, Jodi Lynn O'Keefe, Gabrielle Union, Dule Hill, the late Paul Walker, and....Lil' Kim. That's right. Lil' Kim.
There isn't much in the way of further details except that a "diverse" cast will be sought, and that the plot will remain largely intact. That said, we have to assume there will be some kind of quirky twist otherwise why bother? So many films continue to use this formula (most recently The DUFF) that something will need to be done to make She's All That stand out from the rest. I bet they do something like have Cook and Prinze play the central character's parents. Just you watch.
