First Look at Andrew Garfield in Martin Scorsese's 'Silence'

It's taken a couple of decades but Martin Scorsese is finally wrapping producing on his passion project, an adaptation of Shusaku Endo's 1966 novel, Silence. The spiritual, deeply religious story stars Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano, Ciaran Hinds, and Adam Driver, centering on two Jesuit priests in 17th-century Japan facing persecution and violence as they attempt to spread Christianity and locate their mentor.

Scorsese and Garfield spoke at a press conference in Taiwan about the production, and the director revealed how deeply Endo's novel impacted him, which is why he's been trying to adapt it since 1988...

“The subject matter presented by Shusaku Endo was in my life since I was very, very young. I was very much involved in religion, I was raised in a strong Catholic family. … Further reflection is how [we] want to lead our life in the Christian faith … so ultimately this book drew my attention when it was given to me in 1988.”

Silence is expected to open in 2016. [EW]
