Leigh Whannell Eyes Serial Killer YA Adaptation 'Acceleration'

Known mostly for teaming with James Wan on the Saw and Insidious franchises, Leigh Whannell recently took the helm for this summer's Insidious Chapter 3. While we don't know how that will turn out yet, Whannell is already lining up his next project, one that will bring his skill for horror to an adaptation of YA novel, Acceleration.

Whannell is being sought to direct the film based on Graham McNamees' teen novel which sounds like more of a murder mystery than the typical "special kid saves the world" plot we're accustomed to:

It's a hot summer and in the depths of the Toronto Transit Authority's lost and found, 17-year-old Duncan is cataloging misplaced belongings. And between Jacob, the cranky old man who runs the place, and the endless dusty boxes overflowing with stuff no one will ever claim, Duncan has just about had enough. Then he finds a little leather book filled with the dark and dirty secrets of a twisted mind, a serial killer stalking his prey in the subway. And Duncan can't stop reading. What would you do with a book like that? How far would you go to catch a madman?

A serial killer YA film? Sounds pretty good, and definitely something Whannell could knock out of the park. He would be adapting the screenplay himself assuming a deal can come together. Besides Insidious Chapter 3, Whannell also has the horror-comedy Cooties later this year.[TheTrackingBoard]
