Marvel Eyes Ava DuVernay to Direct Either Black Panther or Captain Marvel

Marvel finds themselves in an interesting situation with their upcoming Captain Marvel and Black Panther films. For the most part they've stuck to lesser known filmmakers to direct their solo movies, but now Marvel seems ready to step the game up a little. We've already heard rumors they were courting Angelina Jolie to direct Captain Marvel, but now The Wrap says they're also looking at Ava DuVernay, director of Best Picture nominee, Selma.

DuVernay is apparently being sought to direct either Captain Marvel or Black Panther, and frankly she'd be a great fit for both. But the report suggests Marvel is doing this because of the flack they've taken for not hiring a female director yet, which looks especially bad when the ACLU is asking for a federal investigation on Hollywood's hiring practices.  It's hard to ignore that DuVernay checks off a couple of boxes for Marvel, but the truth is that she's long been one of the top directors working and she deserves this based on her skill. Period.

None of this is set in stone, obviously, and Marvel is still talking to other directors, but the prospect of DuVernay doing ANYTHING in the MCU is pretty exciting.  Black Panther arrives on July 6th 2018 with Chadwick Boseman starring. Captain Marvel opens November 2nd 2018.
