Reese Witherspoon to Play an Astronaut in 'Pale Blue Dot'

Reese Witherspoon is quickly putting some distance between herself and Hot Pursuit, which totally bombed at the box office. She's already lined up one film in an adaptation of Second Life, and now today she's agreed to produce and star in Pale Blue Dot, which will take her into deep space.

Based on an original screenplay by Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi, the film centers on a successful female astronaut who begins to lose her sanity after returning to her seemingly perfect life after an extended mission in space. The title comes from the famous photograph of Earth taken by the Voyager I probe in 1990. It's also the title of Carl Sagan's 1994 book.

Witherspoon will reteam with Fox Searchlight, the studio behind her Oscar-nominated performance in Wild. This sounds like another film that could see her getting similar attention. Next up for her is a Alexander Payne's sci-fi comedy, Downsizing. [Variety]
