Shortlist of Comedy Directors Emerges for Marvel's Spider-Man Film

Are we already seeing a shake-up with Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man film before it really even gets going? Drew Goddard, who had left the Daredevil Netflix series and was attached to Sony's Sinister Six film, had been set to write and direct the Spidey film a couple of months ago. But something has changed along the way because Deadline is reporting a new shortlist of potential directors has emerged.

Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Vacation), and Ted Melfi (St. Vincent) are the current contenders for the film. A decision could be coming as soon as next week, and presumably we'll know who will take on the role of Spider-Man by then, too. Right now the finalists for the role are Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland, with whoever wins out appearing in Captain America: Civil War.

This list of potential directors tells us that Marvel are looking for someone with a firm grip on comedy, so it looks as if Spidey's trademark wisecracks will be in full force. Maybe Goddard will stick around as a writer?

The solo Spider-Man film arrives on July 28th 2017.
