Long before Ellen Page publicly came out as gay in 2014, she was someone attuned to the issue of gay rights. Since 2010 she had been attached to a feature version of the documentary, Freeheld, based on Cynthia Wade's Oscar-winning documentary about a gay woman who fought to have the relationship she had her with her partner recognized by the state of New Jersey. With the Supreme Court's marriage equality decision still fresh, the first trailer for Freeheld has been released, recounting a key court battle that led helped lead to where the issue stands now.
Directed by Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist), the film stars Page as Stacee Andree, who went to court after she was denied pension benefits after her longtime partner and New Jersey cop Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore) is diagnosed with terminal cancer. And as one might expect, a personal story of this magnitude has attracted a number of big names, including Michael Shannon, Steve Carell, and composer Hans Zimmer.
Freeheld hits theaters on October 22nd, placing it right in the thick of the awards season. Check out the trailer courtesy of Buzzfeed.
