If it's felt like a longer than normal wait for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's revenge-thriller, The Revenant, just look at what he went through to get the film completed. The film has been hit with numerous delays, which reportedly had a hand in Tom Hardy not being able to star in Suicide Squad. Part of the reason was Inarritu's decision to shoot the film using only natural light in the frozen wilds of Canada, going for as authentic of an experience as possible. Coming off the Oscar success of Birdman these are the things a director like Inarritu can demand and have a studio sign off on. Plus, it doesn't hurt that he has Leonardo DiCaprio right there alongside him. And now, finally, the first trailer for The Revenant has been released and it looks like the wait will be worth it.
Set in the early 1900s, the film stars DiCaprio as a beat trapper who is mauled by a bear, glimpsed briefly in the trailer, and then left for dead by his companions. So he does what any man would do which is seek out some cold vengeance. It's a brutal, visceral survival tale that shows Inarritu's incredible filmmaking range as it doesn't look like anything he's done before.
Also starring Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, and Lukas Haas, The Revenant opens Christmas Day.
