'Mission: Impossible 6' may shoot next Summer; Tom Cruise Teases 'Edge of Tomorrow' Sequel
As Tom Cruise gets older, he keeps putting his body on the line more and more. Regardless of what one thinks of him personally, there aren't many actors who give up more physically to entertain their fans, and Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation, which opens this weekend, has Cruise putting himself into harm's way once again. The film is already earning strong reviews and is being projected for a solid debut, but Cruise is ready to look forward to the future of IMF agent Ethan Hunt, and possibly a trip forward in time for Edge of Tomorrow 2, as well.
While appearing on The Daily Show, Cruise revealed that plan for Mission: Impossible 6 are already underway. The plan is to "start shooting it next summer", which would be an incredibly fast turnaround for a franchise that has generally taken a few years between films. What Cruise doesn't say is who he'll be working with on it. Is Christopher McQuarrie coming back as writer and director? or would he possibly turn to another frequent collaborator, Doug Liman?
Speaking of which, Cruise also opened up to MTV about his hopes for a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, the sci-fi film Liman directed and McQuarrie wrote last year. While it barely cracked $100M stateside, overall it earned close to $300M, to go along with relatively strong reviews. For this one, Cruise is already mulling around some plot ideas and has pitched them to his pals...
“I pitched it to McQuarrie and Doug. We were there one night and I was like, I’ve got an idea for it."
He also hopes to have Emily Blunt return, and why wouldn't he? She was the most badass aspect of that film, earning her numerous award nominations and victories in the process. If Cruise is going to "live die repeat" yet again, of course he's going to want her by his side.
Next up for Cruise is Liman's drug thriller, Mena, plus he'll return for a sequel to Jack Reacher.
