Jake Gyllenhaal may get 'Stronger'; Vince Vaughn heads to WWII Drama 'Hacksaw Ridge'

While multiple films on the Boston Marathon bombing are on the way, each taking a different look at the devastating act of terrorism. One that has a leg up on the other films is Stronger, which recently landed David Gordon Green to direct the adaptation of the memoir by Jeff Bauman, who lost both of his legs in the attack. Now Variety reports that Jake Gyllenhaal is expected to receive an offer to lead the film, after Green met with a number of A-list stars for the role. Scott Silver and John Pollano wrote the screenplay, which will center on Bauman's fight to recover from the attack, plus the part he played in the ensuing manhunt to find those responsible. The other Boston Marathon bombing movies in the works right now are Patriot's Day, which will star Mark Wahlberg, and Boston Strong, which has Casey Affleck attached but no director.

As the second and highly divisive season of HBO's True Detective comes to a close, Vince Vaughn is heading from a theoretical battlefield to a literal one. According to Deadline, he's joined Andrew Garfield and Sam Worthington in the WWII drama, Hacksaw Ridge, which will be the next film directed by Mel Gibson. Garfield plays real-life hero Corporal Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector ever to be honored with the Congressional Medal of Honor. Drafted in 1942, he refused to carry a weapon or take a life during WWII, but was recognized as a hero for rescuing 75 men at the Battle of Okinawa. Vaughn will play Sgt. Howell, a non-commissioned officer who pushes his soldiers to the limit physically and mentally, and when Doss refuses to fight it contradicts everything he's ever known about war.
