Fatality!! Finish Him!! If you suddenly just got the urge to have Scorpion rip Sub-Zero's heart out, then chances are you're a Mortal Kombat fan. The graphic video game franchise that began in the '90s has been targeted for a cinematic reboot for years, following on two movies that were released in 1995 and 1997 to capitalize on the game's popularity. A third film had been planned, but ultimately fans got an excellent web series in Mortal Kombat: Legacy. But it turns out another Mortal Kombat movie hasn't been the victim of a fatality, after all, with Furious 7 director James Wan coming aboard to help make it happen.
Wan is set to produce a Mortal Kombat reboot that will have no ties to the web series or the previous movies. Described as “a departure from the mythology,” with “darker, brutally real martial arts", the screenplay will be written by Mortal Kombat: Legacy's Oren Uziel and The Expendables screenwriter David Callahan. The story will center on an ordinary man who discovers his full potential when he's caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the creatures of Outworld. To save the planet he'll need to win the martial arts tournament known as "Mortal Kombat".
There's no director attached at this point, and Wan certainly won't have time since he'll be busy directing Warner Bros.' Aquaman film. [TheTrackingBoard]
