Greta Gerwig to make directorial debut 'Lady Bird'; William Friedkin to direct 'The Winter Of Frankie Machine'

It was pretty much inevitable that Greta Gerwig would make the move to directing given her collaborative efforts with Noah Baumbach, and now she's got her first project all lined up. According to Deadline, Gerwig will make her directorial debut with Lady Bird, which she wrote but will find a different actress to star in. The story will center on a young woman's final year in Sacramento. Perhaps Gerwig will turn to her Mistress America co-star Lola Kirke for the lead role?

Once a project that had Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann attached to direct at various stages, an adaptation of Don Winslow's The Winter of Frankie Machine has been in the works for years. Winslow has become a hot property around Hollywood of late with Oliver Stone adapting Savages a couple of years ago, and Ridley Scott recently agreeing to direct The Cartel, and so now is the right time for the long-developing film to be revived. William Friedkin (Killer Joe) has come aboard to direct The Winter of Frankie Machine, with Winslow assisting on the screenplay. The story centers on Frank, a retired hitman who is asked to help solve a mob dispute, only to discover it was a setup to get him killed. To find out who set him up he'll need to become the brutally efficient killer Frankie Machine once more. [Deadline]
