The New 'Jem and the Holograms' Trailer gets some Synergy

One of the big complaints about the first trailer for Jon M. Chu's live-action Jem and the Holograms is that it didn't look at all like the '80s cartoon it's based on. Where was Jem's holographic super-computer, Synergy? Instead the film looked like a poorer version of the awesome and underrated Josie & the Pussycats. What's the point of making a Jem movie that fans of the show wouldn't want to see? The latest trailer looks to correct that oversight.

The new Jem and the Holograms trailer introduces a little robot named S1N3RG.Y, that ha similar holographic abilities as the cartoon version. It remains to be seen if the R2-D2-esque droid is responsible for giving Jem her dazzling on stage persona as it does in the cartoon, or if it's just a glorified video camera showing home movies. Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis star in the film which still looks pretty terrible overall. Seriously, who is this movie for? Anyone who knows Jem and the Holograms is too old for what this trailer is promising. Here's the synopsis:

As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden.  In Universal Pictures’ Jem and the Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.

Jem and the Holograms opens October 23rd.
