Box Office: 'The Perfect Guy' and M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Visit' Start Strong

1. The Perfect Guy- $26.7M
Despite the film not really being screened for the majority of press, it was clear The Perfect Guy was going to be tough to beat this week. The thriller stars Morris Chestnut, Sanaa Lathan, and Michael Ealy, and centers on a woman who falls in love with "the perfect guy", only for him to become a psychotic stalker. The reason it was obvious the film would do well was the cast, who have a built-in audience that follows them from project to project, but also because of the success of Obsessed in 2009. Remember that film, with Idris Elba and Beyonce battling a home-wrecking Ali Larter? It opened with a comparative $28M and finished up with $73M, and those numbers seem about right for The Perfect Guy to wrap up with.
2. The Visit (review here)- $25.6M
Here comes Shyamalan! M. Night Shyamalan's most vocal critics will have a tough time turning him into a punchline now as he's definitely back with The Visit. The found footage horror opened with a strong $25.6M, and could actually surpass The Perfect Guy when the final totals are revealed tomorrow. The film, which features no big stars, has received some of the best reviews he's had in years, and some of the best response for any recent horror film. Certainly this is about as good of a bounce back from After Earth, which wasn't really his movie, as he could have hoped for.
3. War Room- $7.4M/$39.1M
4. A Walk In the Woods- $4.6M/$19.8M
Slipping 44% in its second week was the long-anticipated adaptation A Walk In the Woods, bringing its total to $19.8M. This isn't too bad for such a small-scale feature, and clearly the big names of Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, and Emma Thompson are helping to drive this one.
5. Mission:Impossible- Rogue Nation- $4.1M/$188.1M
An $86M kickoff in China, the world's largest market, has pushed MI:5 over the $600M mark worldwide.
6. Straight Outta Compton- $4M/$155.7M
7. No Escape- $2.8M/$24.1M
8. The Transporter Refueled- $2.7M/$13.3M
9. 90 Minutes In Heaven- $2.1M
The second faith-based drama in the top 10 this week, 90 Minutes In Heaven managed to do well in only 878 screens with $2.1M.
10. Un gallo con muchos huevos- $1.9/$6.6M
