Denis Villeneuve's 'Blade Runner' Sequel will Resolve the Deckard Mystery
Denis Villeneuve is on a roll, quickly establishing himself as one of the most interesting directors around with Prisoners, Enemy, and the upcoming drug war thriller, Sicario, which has been earning some of the year's best reviews. Next up for him is the sci-fi film Story of Your Life with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, but after that he embarks on his most high-profile film to date, a sequel to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.
Making the press rounds for Sicario, Villenueve has obviously been peppered with Blade Runner questions, in particular about the original film's greatest mystery. Harrison Ford is expected to return as Deckard, who may or may not be a replicant rather than a human. That's the question many have asked, and Villeneuve promises Crave there will be a resolution....
“Now that I am on the other side of the fence, I cannot answer. I love mystery. I love shadows. I love doubts. I would just want to say to the fans that we will take care of that mystery. I will take care of it.”
Now, that's not exactly a promise he'll answer the question. He could instead render it a moot subject, maybe by killing Deckard or introducing a different mystery. Ryan Gosling is circling a role in the film, as well, and it's likely his character will factor into the answer somehow.
Blade Runner 2 is expected to begin filming next year for release in 2017.
