What does one think of when considering the work of Australian director John Hillcoat? So far he's directed three films, gritty Western thriller The Proposition, post-apocalyptic drama The Road, and bootlegging film Lawless. Hillcoat has never had an issue attracting big name stars for his mature, brutally violent movies about people with questionable morals. But with Triple Nine, a cop thriller that many have been eyeing closely for years, Hillcoat has assembled another star-studded ensemble for what could be his darkest and biggest film yet.
Starring Casey Affleck, Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Woody Harrelson, Clifton Collins Jr., Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Anthony Mackie, Gal Gadot, and Teresa Palmer with an Atticus Ross score, the crime flick centers on a group of corrupt cops who stage a 999, police code for a downed officer, to cover for an impossible heist they're pulling off. The first red band trailer has been released, complete with F-bombs and severed heads, and it's fascinating to see Hillcoat's moody approach applied to the crime genre. The film is based on a screenplay by Matt Cook that made the Black List a few years ago.
This has been my most anticipated film ever since the cast got put together, and now I'm more pumped than ever. Triple Nine hits theaters on February 19th 2016.
