'Thor: Ragnarok' Lands 'Flight of the Conchords' Director Taika Waititi
Marvel's Phase 3 kicks into overdrive with next year's Captain America: Civil War, and not long after that filming will begin on Thor: Ragnarok. While there had been some hope that Kenneth Branagh would direct the Asgardian's third movie and replace the outgoing Alan Taylor, that simply isn't going to happen. Now Marvel has made their choice and it's something of a surprise, one that keeps with the studio's penchant for giving opportunities to mostly-unknown filmmakers.
According to The Wrap, Flight of the Conchords director Taika Waititi is in final talks to direct Thor: Ragnarok. Waititi is coming off strong reviews for his offbeat vampire comedy, What We Do In the Shadows. So what does this mean? Maybe Jemaine Clement can play a villain in the Marvel flick? Maybe Bret McKenzie can work on the score?
Not much is known about Thor: Ragnarok although the title suggests the complete destruction of the Asgardians. Chris Hemsworth will of course return as Thor, along with Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, and more. The film is scheduled to open on July 28th 2017.
