Both Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara could Return for 'The Girl In the Spider's Web'

What exactly is Sony planning when it comes to The Girl in the Spider's Web, their follow-up to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? While Fincher isn't likely to return given all of the problems he had with the studio, early reports suggested that stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig wouldn't be back, either. Mara isn't willing to concede that point just yet, and now an update by EW says it might have been premature to write her and Craig off.

Craig and Mara "could return for the new film" according to the site, but everything seems to be kind of up in the air right now. Sony is looking to cut costs across the board, projecting a $60M budget which would help justify the R-rated thriller. Those kinds of numbers surely wouldn't attract Fincher, and they could be a deterrent to bringing back the pricey co-stars. At the same time, Sony's outlook is that 'Spider's Web' is a completely new book, the fourth in the Millennium series and the first not written by author Stieg Larsson, so audiences may be more open to a new cast.

Alicia Vikander has been mentioned as a possible replacement in the role of Lisbeth Salander, but it looks as if Mara isn't completely out of the picture yet.
