Matthew McConaughey has avoided blockbuster franchises since his rise to the top of the Hollywood food chain, but it hasn't been due to a lack of opportunities. Not only did he recently turn down a villain role in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, but he was approached for the heel role of Randall Flagg in The Stand. That project never quite came together, or at least it hasn't yet, but McConaughey could still get to play Flagg after all.
McConaughey is in talks to star in Stephen King's The Dark Tower, which is being designed as a big screen franchise with a companion TV series. Apparently he's circling the role of heroic gunslinger Roland Deschain, but he's leaning more towards the role of Flagg aka The Man in Black aka Walter o'Dim. The books are a blend of Western, horror, and fantasy, all areas McConaughey has largely stayed away from. While Flagg has appeared as the embodiment of evil in many of King's books, it's in The Dark Tower that more of his past is revealed, which could be what has McConaughey interested.
