A box office battle of galactic proportions could see Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which you've all seen now probably, throwing the old records down the Sarlaac Pit. Current estimates have the J.J. Abrams-directed film hitting between $50M-$55M in Thursday night showings, which would surpass the $43.5M set by Harry Potter and the Death Hallows: Part 2.
The Force is also strong in its prospects to break the opening weekend records, currently held by Jurassic World with $208M. Considering more than $100M worth of tickets were pre-ordered months ago, this seems like a pretty good bet especially with many likely to see the film multiple times in the first few days of release. Many theaters are making showings available 24hrs a day to make sure everyone has a chance to purchase a ticket and see it whenever they want.
Worldwide its prospects are even better with some analysts projecting more than $600M overall. But Goldman Sachs says to chill out on any hope it will best James Cameron's Titanic and Avatar and move into the top spot all-time. They project a final tally of $1.95B when Star Wars' run is finished, which would leave it at third.
I wouldn't put anything past a Jedi, though. Do or do not, there is no try.
