'Creed' Sequel Definitely Happening, May Reunite Rocky With Apollo Creed

Before Creed came along there were already six of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky movies, so the desire for more sequels was always going to be there. That the film is also a box office and potentially Oscar-nominated success is only adds fuel to that fire. And according to MGM's CEO Gary Barber that sequel is a sure thing. He tells Variety that “There’s no doubt that we’re making a ‘Creed 2." Well, there you go.

While there is certainty in his Barber's answer, questions lurk elsewhere. For instance it remains to be seen if Ryan Coogler will have time to return considering he may direct Marvel's Black Panther. There's no doubt MGM will want to keep this gravy train going as quickly as possible, with or without Coogler at the helm. At the very least he may be involved in a producing capacity, and of course he'd help develop the story. On that front, Stallone says Coogler has an ambitious idea that could see Rocky and the late Apollo Creed reunited.

“Ryan has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together.  Think of ‘The Godfather 2.’ That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious."

Stallone added that he ran into Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed up until the character was killed in Rocky IV, and the actor is still in top shape.  Still, that's a lot of years between movies and neither actor is getting any younger. Plus, where would that leave Michael B. Jordan's character, Adonis Creed? Jordan joked...

"So it’s going to be a CGI-version of Sly? I’m trying to think about it. Knowing Ryan, he’ll find a clever way to make that work.”

Or the sequel could go a more simplified route that would follow Adonis as he takes on a new opponent, although Stallone's idea for that opponent sounds like an Ivan Drago retread...

“You’ll have him face a different opponent, which I would say is a more ferocious, big Russian. You can start to meld my experiences and then you start to bring different cultures into it. And you can see what’s happening with the Russians today in America. The complication will come with the girl’s ambition, because she’s not Adrian. She has places to go, things to see, the clock is running on her hearing.”

Uh, no. How about a film that shows us scenes from the third fight between Rocky and Apollo Creed that was hinted at in the movie?
