New 'Voltron' Animated Series Assembles At Netflix
After years of promises that have gone nowhere, fans of '80s childhood favorite, Voltron, have probably given up on the hope of a live-action film. But perhaps a new animated series on Netflix will suffice? The streaming service already has quite a relationship with Dreamworks Animation, but the two sides have chosen to expand on that distribution deal on a global level, and part of that includes a brand new Voltron series plus a new Trollhunters cartoon from Guillermo Del Toro.
Voltron and the associated toy line centered on a team of pilots who defended the universe in mechanized lions that form one giant robot. There was another, less popular version of Voltron that involved motorized vehicles, but nobody wants to see that one revived. Theoretically, there could still be a live-action movie sometime down the line but it seems like rights issues always get in the way.
As for Trollhunters, it's from Del Toro which makes it automatically something worth paying attention to. It's described as “a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.” If it's anything like Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, or the sorely overlooked Crimson Peak then we can probably expect something special, and since it's on Netflix Del Toro can get as weird as he wants.
Both shows are expected to debut some time in 2016, and more projects will likely be announced soon. [THR]
