Jennifer Lawrence Is Fidel Castro's Lover And Would-Be Killer In 'Marita'

Jennifer Lawrence's Joy didn't quite connect with audiences or critics the way some of her earlier films have, but it was still enough to earn her yet another Academy Award nomination. While she's got the potential blockbusters X-Men: Apocalypse and Passengers on the way, Lawrence may have found the next film that could earn her awards recognition.

Lawrence is set to star in Marita, in which she'll play Fidel Castro's lover, Marita Lorenz. The film was written by Eric Warren Singer, who last worked with Lawrence on American Hustle, for which she won Best Supporting Actress. The script centers on the German-born Lorenz who met Castro in 1959 and began a romantic affair with him when she was just 19 years old. She would eventually become part of a CIA plot to assassinate the Cuban leader.

Lorenz's story was part of a very good 2001 documentary, Dear Fidel, which might be good to check out before seeing what Lawrence can do in the role. At this point there's no director attached, but don't expect that to stay the case for long. [THR]
