There are a number of great, fully-drawn characters in John Crowley's Oscar-nominated Brooklyn. Saoirse Ronan's performance has earned her a Best Actress nomination, but she's surrounded by a terrific supporting cast that includes the BAFTA nominated Julie Walters, who played the feisty and protective boarding house overseer, Madge Kehoe. And while we're unlikely to see any kind of sequel to the 1950s period piece, a TV follow-up is on the way that will bring Walters back into the fold.
First reported by Screen Daily then confirmed by Variety, Walters will reprise her role in a Brooklyn TV spinoff from producers Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey. The series will focus on Kehoe and the women from all walks of life who pass through her New York boarding house. Ronan won't be back, and Emily Bett Rickards is busy on CW's Arrow, but there may be a chance of others who stayed under Kehoe's roof to return.
Brooklyn is currently out in theaters (it was my #1 film of 2015 so check it out) and once its run is wrapped movement will begin on the series.
