Joaquin Phoenix Could Play Jesus In "Mary Magadalene' Film Opposite Rooney Mara

Joaquin Phoenix has had such an unpredictable career, even faking a meltdown just so he could make a mockumentary about it, that one never knows what film he'll do next. Remember when he nearly joined Marvel's Doctor Strange? It's hard to know what exactly Phoenix is up to, but it's doubtful anybody predicted he would play Jesus, and yet that may be about to happen.

According to Deadline, Phoenix is in very early discussions to play Jesus Christ in Mary Magdalene, which would see him reunited with Her co-star, Rooney Mara. The film would center on Jesus' most devoted follower, who is believed to have witnesses his crucifixion and resurrection. Garth Davis (Top of the Lake) is directing, and if this deal goes through it will raise the profile of his film significantly.

Phoenix could use a rebound after the underwhelming Irrational Man and divisive Inherent Vice, although to be fair every portrayal of Jesus comes with its share of detractors. However, it's also the kind of role that could be a defining one in Phoenix's career, like his performances in Walk the Line and The Master. Production on Mary Magdalene begins this summer.
