While James Cameron pushes the filmmaking envelope with hugely expensive, futuristic 3D cameras used to bring his Avatar world to life, Sean Baker showed up at Sundance last year with Tangerine, an energetic L.A. comedy shot on his iPhone that became a sensation, earning awards and rave reviews in the process. Hey, there isn't just one way to make a movie, right? So what's Baker going to do for his next project? Well, leave the west coast for starters.
Baker will head to the Sunshine State for The Florida Project, which he'll shoot in 35mm so no iPhone this time! The story centers on a 6-year-old girl and her rag-tag group of close friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility, and a sense of adventure, while their parents and the adults around them struggle with hard times. Baker co-wrote the script with Chris Bergoch.
Filming is set to begin this summer, and one has to wonder what kind of tricks Baker could pull out of his hat this time.
