Adam McKay is finally getting a comic book movie to call his own. It only took a decade or so. For years he tried to mount an adaptation of Garth Ennis' The Boys, but that never happened and it's now being developed for TV. Finally he got a chance as a co-writer on Marvel's Ant-Man, but it wasn't his film even it kept some of his humorous sensibilities. But now McKay gets his shot as Deadline reports he'll be bringing Mark Waid's Boom! Studios comic, Irredeemable, to the silver screen.
McKay will be teaming up with screenwriter Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) on the film which has a very cool premise. It centers on the world's greatest and most powerful superhero named The Plutonian, who suddenly turns evil and starts slaughtering the human population. His former teammates in a group known as The Paradigm turn to a famous supervillain as their final, desperate hope to stop him. Basically, imagine if Superman went totally nuts and that's what this is.
There's a very Silence of the Lambs quality to the story which should be something new for superhero movies. It's also pretty graphic and a lot of people get killed, so don't expect this to be some warm and fuzzy Marvel movie. Interestingly, this is set up at 20th Century Fox who already have the X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four. This won't be part of that universe but could be the start of an all-new one.
